SF Curator/Writer Considers Insider/Outsider Art

Back in March of this year I wrote a very critical review of ArtWorks and their hanging of their show Green Spaces: Everyday is Earth Day. My concern was what appear as a terrible lack of respect of the outsider artists from Visionaries and Voices who were featured in the exhibition.

This week, Anuradha Vikram, Bay Area curator and writer, and Director of Aicon Gallery in Palo Alto has begun a discussion on Insider/Outsider art. She plans to engage this topic from various angles over the coming weeks.

You can read Ms. Vikram's introduction to this topic and the following essays at the SFMOMA Blog.

Dear Kathy,

Sad to say, this type of work is often poorly presented in public setting. It can be frustrating when you respect these artists and their work.

I post about artists who are often called "Outsiders", it may be of interest.
